मि॒त्रो जना॑न्यातयति ब्रुवा॒णो मि॒त्रो दा॑धार पृथि॒वीमु॒त द्याम्। मि॒त्रः कृ॒ष्टीरनि॑मिषा॒भि च॑ष्टे मि॒त्राय॑ ह॒व्यं घृ॒तव॑ज्जुहोत॥
mitro janān yātayati bruvāṇo mitro dādhāra pṛthivīm uta dyām | mitraḥ kṛṣṭīr animiṣābhi caṣṭe mitrāya havyaṁ ghṛtavaj juhota ||

अब नव ऋचावाले उनसठवें सूक्त का प्रारम्भ है। उसके प्रथम मन्त्र में मित्रगुणों का उपदेश करते हैं।

अथ मित्रगुणानाह।
हे मनुष्या यो ब्रुवाणो मित्रो जनाननिमिषा यातयति यो मित्रः पृथिवीमुत द्यामनिमिषा दाधार यो मित्रः कृष्टीरनिमिषाऽभिचष्टे तस्मै मित्राय घृतवद्धव्यं जुहोत ॥१॥

The qualities of a sincere friends are narrated.
A Mitra (a friend) animates men to exertion (action. Ed.) through his inspiring words the the Mitra (God Who is Friend of all) sustains both the earth and heaven. The Mitra (third, king) is also friend of all who takes care of all farmers and other men with unclosing eyes (attentively. Ed.). The fourth Mitra (fire which is benevolent like a friend) accepts the oblations of ghee.
